About

Five Things inspires each of five brave (or is that brazen?) and talented artist-people to concoct a new and intriguing five-minute piece (from prose to poem to performance, or a tantalizing mixture to each’s taste) using humor and a central theme. We’ve been doing this since September 2008.

Our inaugural show’s theme was “Dollar General.”It went like this: five fabulous items were purchased at the Dollar General and bestowed upon the following fabulous five: Stacy Muszynski, Jack Kaulfus, Owen Egerton, and Southpaw Jones. Amazing things were said (think “blowjob lessons,” think “Mickey Rourke”) and done (think Houdiniesque sleight of hand, think even more amazing than two colons in one sentence.)

Our second show — remembered (sort of) as “the dirty drinkfest” — featured the likes of Elizabeth Crane (a courageous soul indeed to have remained dirty-drink-free), Mike Hart, Randy Skidmore, Rudy Ramirez, Vince Martinez, and Legs Against Arms. These bona fide artists created pieces based on a signature shot — from maple syrup to Peruvian Pisco to tequila to…we forget, nearly no stone was left sober.

Our third show, “five women on their men,” featured readers Diane Fleming, Sarah Smith, Jeannette Muniz, Leah Moss, and Margo Rabb, with music by Peoplefood, Jeannette and Richard, and Melody Murder. Charts were presented, songs were sung, men were enjoyed.

In another adventure, five men got the last word. Doug Dorst, Matthew Stuart, Mike Whalen, David Jewell, and Tony Jackson spelunked the dark comedic caves of femininity. Legs Against Arms led them in (acoustic style!), and The Bubbles brought them out.
